HOW TO USE STORYTELLING TO BUILD EMPATHY

Big Talk is a movement by Kalina Silverman that came out of the need to go out and met strangers and instead of making small talk, engage [them] in deeper conversations right away.

 

“What if, when talking to our friends, co-workers, or even complete strangers, we could skip the small talk, and instead talk about the things that really mattered in life?”

 

Skipping the small talk = making “Big Talk”

 

The idea came out of the need to go out and meet new people and instead of just making small talk, actually have deeper meaningful conversations with them. [deep philosophical conversations about life]

Skipping the small talk means getting the chance to learn so much more about someone’s life story.

What Makes a Question Big Talk?

For a question to qualify as Big Talk, it must meet the following three criteria:

  • UNIVERSAL – Any human could answer it
  • MEANINGFUL – Thought-provoking
  • OPEN-ENDED – Elicits a story (not just yes or no)

Examples:

Here are some examples of Big Talk questions:

  • What do you want to do before you die?
  • What if you found out you were going to die tomorrow?
  • What do you spend too much time doing?
  • What new habits are you trying to form?
How do we scale meaningful connections using new technologies without losing our humanity?

How Might We Use Big Talk?

We can use big talk to:

  1. Build empathy between strangers
  2. Reconnect with yourself
 

1) Building Empathy Between Strangers

Skipping the small talk means getting the chance to learn so much more about someone’s life story.
Use Big Talk to quickly build empathy with strangers.

 

2) Reconnecting with yourself

You can use Big Talk as a tool for understanding and reconnecting with yourself.

Here’s an exercise you can []:
  • Take a deck of sticky notes and write one Big Talk question on each.
  • Use these as journal entries.
  • This is a great way to reconnect with yourself.
